They were sitting outside, coffee between them.

It was getting cold.

“Accha listen.”

“Uh oh.”

“I’ve been thinking.”

“Should you be?”

“Listen na.”

“Go on.”

“I think I should go on a date.”

“There it is.”

“What? You never hear me out.”

“Fine. Who is it?”

“Does it matter?”

“I think it does. Isn’t that how dates generally work?”

“I mean, someone. Anyone.”

“Right.”

“I just think it would be interesting.”

“Interesting how?”

“To sit across from someone, have a drink, talk for a few hours. Get to know them.”

“A few hours? That’s a long date.”

“You’re not listening.”

“Fine. And why exactly are you doing this?”

“To see what happens.”

“That sounds reassuring.”

“No, listen. I’m not saying I want anything to happen.”

“You sure about that?”

“I’m just saying I want to know that nothing could happen.”

A pause.

“You’ve lost me.”

“Imagine I’m sitting across from someone who is, by every conceivable measure, wonderful. Funny. Intelligent. Attractive. Says all the right things.”

“Do I have to listen to all this?”

“And they could tell me anything. Anything at all. They could say exactly what I wanted to hear. They could make the most convincing case in the world.”

“And?”

“And I’d still know.”

“Know what?”

“That I’d rather still be sitting across from you.”

A longer pause this time.

“So your idea is to go on a date with someone completely random?”

“Exactly.”

“To prove a point to me?”

“I don’t need to prove anything to you.”

“Of course.”

“I’d be doing it for myself.”

“That makes even less sense.”

“I think it makes perfect sense.”

“I’m sure you do.”

“And if, somehow, I did come back from this date thinking otherwise…”

“Thinking otherwise? So there is a possibility...”

“Then you should consider yourself very lucky.”

“Lucky?”

“Imagine dodging a bullet like that. I know I would.”

A prolonged pause.

“You know what?”

“What?”

“Maybe you’re right.”

“I know.”

“That’s the worrying part.”

She reached for her shawl and wrapped it around him.
